  • 108 people began the process of saving a life by signing up for the International Bone Marrow Registry through Save Giovanni’s Friends Bone Marrow Drive. (www.helpgiovanniguglielmo.org)

Candidate Highlights

  • Former Gov. Mike Huckabee stopped by the ServiceVote project after his speech at the convention, praising the service being done and the young people in attendance to continue serving their communities.
  • Mayor Steve Marchand, representing Gov. Bill Richardson, also took time to speak with City Year New Hampshire AmeriCorps members and promised his participation in their upcoming Global Youth Service Day project.
  • Senator Joe Biden and Former Senator Mike Gravel were presented with YSA’s Nine for ’09 proposal, outlining nine ways for the next President to strengthen youth service when taking office in January 2009.
  • Senator Lindsey Graham, representing Senator John McCain, answered a question from the audience about national service saying, “At first, I wasn’t really sold on the idea of paying someone to volunteer, but I was wrong. In my state of South Carolina, rural communities have benefited from your work product. We get young people to come in and do projects and supplement local government. John is very right to expand that idea.” He continued, “What John has in mind is to build off the AmeriCorps model. We have an immigration problem; we have a border security problem. We have all kinds of national security and domestic needs. A mantra of John’s campaign is to serve a call bigger than yourself. Under a McCain presidency, there will be more opportunities for Americans to contribute than there are today.”

This is only the beginning! Look for more news from ServiceVote in the next month.

  • ServiceVote will launch its online campaign headquarters at www.servicevote.org by January 1, providing a place for young people to learn about the issues and candidates, to interact with each other through a variety of social networking tools, and to find ideas, tools & resources for continued action.
  • The next ServiceVote event will be in California at the end of January while both parties have debates hosted by CNN and the LA Times right before the California primary on Super-Duper Tuesday.
  • We're also still looking for local, state, and national partners. Go to About --- Our Partners for more information.
